Apple TV+’s biggest hit and number one series, Hijack Season 1, which starred Idris Elba in 2023, has captured the attention of both audiences and critics alike. As a corporate negotiator, the Luther star plays a man in the show who is trying to save everyone aboard a hijacked plane headed towards London. At the end of the story, in its 7th (last) episode of Season One, that situation is resolved (in some way or another). Fans eagerly anticipate Season Two of the show after the stunning performance of the 50-year-old English actor and the series’ nail-biting thriller.
An interview with Variety featured series’ executive producer Hakan Kousetta discussing Season One’s exciting finale and plans for Season Two. Apple TV+ hit ‘Hijack’ is directed by Jim Field Smith and Mo Ali and written by George Kay.
Executive Producer Hakan Kousetta Reveals More About Apple TV+ Thriller Series
Between its critical reaction and high viewership, Apple TV+’s big hit ‘Hijack‘ seems like a miniseries without a doubt, and the show’s title implies another hijacking, so a ‘Season Two’ may not be out of the question. In a recent interview with Variety, the show’s executive producer Hakan Kousetta discussed the season one finale and revealed more details about the thriller series.
During his interview with Variety, in response to a question about whether every episode ending on a cliffhanger was organic or accidental, Kousetta replied,
“It wasn’t accidental. Nothing’s accidental about this show. The idea was to maintain a propulsiveness to the show, because obviously the concern about real-time and confined elements is, how long can your audience bear to be with you on that journey?”
Furthermore, he was asked about the ending and how serving matters to them then he said,
“We discussed it a lot. There was always a desire that there would be a resolution that wouldn’t be completely deflating and disappointing, and sort of a miserable ending.”
He added,
“Hijacks don’t really happen, and this is entertainment, right? We’re stretching the credibility of reality. But you want to also stay within the boundaries of what’s possible, and not just insult everyone’s intelligence so you’re always walking that tightrope.”
Kousetta specified about the ending and said,
“The stakes are really, really going to have to be high. We used to nickname it the “clanding.” It wasn’t a crash and it wasn’t a landing: It was a “clanding.” And there was a lot of debate about what the consequences of that would be, but in the end we settled on what we obviously got. It’s not just a physical resolution, it’s an emotional resolution.”
Everyone can relate to the show’s ensemble cast, which strives to be authentic and make the show a great watch for everyone. Kousetta also discussed trying to make the show accessible to a global audience, but that was technically challenging.
A Second Season Of ‘Hijack’ With Idris Elba Isn’t Off The Table
As Sam Nelson in ‘Hijack,’ English actor Idris Elba, 50, became extremely popular with viewers and critics, so Apple is allegedly looking forward to having him back in another season. According to Variety, Hakan Kousetta recently discussed the possibility of Elba returning as Nelson again. During the interview, EP Kousetta positively hinted at things to come for the show’s Season 2 with his statement that Elba would also return in the next season.
During his interview with Variety, Kousetta said,
“Oh, gosh, I wish I could tell you that. I hope so but we’ll have to see.”
He added,
“I mean, we’ve thought about it, obviously. And that is really challenging.
“It is something that you’re like, “Wow, how would you do that and it not be completely ridiculous?” We talk about it — but yeah, we’ll have to wait and see. I’m never gonna say no.”
Idris Elba also shared his thoughts on the possibility of a Sam Nelson return prior to Hijack‘s premiere in June in an interview with Variety and said,
“What would be the acceptable scenario that he comes back? Because we’ve thought about this and obviously Apple have gone, ‘Well, we really love the show.’ And I think, you know, Rotten Tomatoes is at 92% at the moment, which is a good sign, but it’s kind of like — he’s not a cop — what would be the acceptable Sam Nelson return? And if I’m honest, I’m not sure. I’d like that, but I just don’t want to put him on another hijack. I’m open to that character coming back. I think if people were compelled to like the character, then I’m in.”
A seven-hour hijacking ordeal over London follows business negotiator Sam Nelson played by Idris Elba, as he attempts to save the day. There was a crash landing at the end of the season (Spoiler Alert). In addition to Idris Elba, the cast includes Neil Maskell, Eve Myles, Christine Adams, Max Beesley, Archie Panjabi, Ben Miles, and Kate Phillips.
All episodes of Hijack – Season 1 are now available on Apple TV+.
