HEARD, about their highly publicized defamation case trial, which divided the internet into two teams. The most popular streaming platform Netflix has also confirmed the release date of its highly anticipated documentary about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation trial, which became a global fixation. According to reports, the hit streaming service whipped up a documentary series around the famous trial shortly after Netflix acquired the rights.
There may be no more publicized trial of the 21st century than Johnny Depp’s defamation case against Amber Heard. This case became a weeks-long spectacle that was live-streamed from the courtroom and followed on social media. Netflix Confirms Release Date For DEPP v. HEARD Documentary
In Netflix’s three-part documentary series, DEPP v. HEARD, the trial and its repercussions on social media will be examined. On July 26, Netflix released the official trailer for its upcoming docuseries DEPP v. HEARD, which will be released on August 16, 2023. This will allegedly feature footage from the trial and concentrates on the highly publicized and internationally televised legal battle between the former couple, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The trailer was released only months after the trial’s one-year anniversary.
According to the official synopsis,
“DEPP v. HEARD is a three-part series examining the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention and became the world’s first trial by TikTok.”
The description added,
“Showing both testimonies side-by-side for the first time, this series explores this global media event, questioning the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society.”
Netflix’s Tudum article says,
“DEPP v. HEARD has the goal of presenting a neutral overview of what happens when the court of public opinion starts to overshadow reality.”
This upcoming Netflix documentary is directed by Emma Cooper, who made Netflix’s 2022 documentary The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes. However, the case has been the subject of several documentary films, as well as an original Tubi film called Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial. In the documentary, it is unclear still being determined reenactments of the court case stories will be shown or if footage from the trial itself will be included.
Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard: Defamation Case Trial Brief, Verdict And The Settlement
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny Depp and Aquaman star Amber Heard, the former couple who divorced in 2016, have been involved in a very public legal battle since 2016 they first filed for divorce. There was much speculation on social media after Heard accused his ex-husband Depp of domestic abuse. In response, Depp filed a libel defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife.
The Virginia trial ended with a verdict in favor of Depp on June 1, 2022, following a seven-person jury. Although the actor was not named in the article, he won all three counts of defamation relating to a 2018 op-ed he wrote about coming forward with domestic abuse claims. As a result, he was awarded $10.35 million in damages. One of Heard’s three defamation counterclaims was ultimately successful, and she was awarded $2 million in damages.
Heard confirmed on her Instagram handle in December that she and Depp had reached a settlement and withdrawn their appeals. Referring to a tough decision, heard wrote in her statement,
“I finally have an opportunity to emancipate myself from something I attempted to leave over six years ago and on terms I can agree to. I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags with respect to my voice moving forward.”
According to reports, it was finally agreed between the two sides that Amber Heard’s insurance company would pay her ex-husband Depp $1 million in a settlement. Despite this, the Pirates of the Caribbean star would donate the settlement amount to several charities instead of keeping it as per his lawyer’s statements.
