In an era when franchises and IP-based content are meant to run forever, Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua are reportedly ready to put “The Equalizer” franchise to rest with the upcoming third and allegedly final installment. In the past decade, director Antoine Fuqua and the 68-year-old actor have embarked on a journey together. “Training Day” was their first collaboration in 2001, and the thriller TV series “The Equalizer” was their second in 2014, where Denzel Washington unleashed hell as Robert McCall, taking down a bunch of criminals who soon realized they shouldn’t have crossed his path.

Based on the thriller TV series of the same name, “The Equalizer” movie franchise became a lean, mean vigilante revenge flick. In a new featurette featuring Robert McCall’s journey, Denzel Washington promises “The Equalizer 3” will differ from its predecessors and more likely be a franchise finale.

Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 3” May Be The Final Installment In The Franchise, Hints Director Antoine Fuqua

Director Antoine Fuqua and 68-year-old Denzel Washington’s bond over the “Equalizer” franchise is unmatched. In an interview with Total Film Magazine via GamesRadar, Fuqua discusses how the film could be the last in the franchise starring Denzel Washington as Robert McCall, a retired U.S. Marine and former DIA officer.

The Equalizer 3‘ Director Antoine Fuqua

In the interview with Total Film Magazine, Antoine Fuqua, the director of the “Equalizer” film series, said,

“I don’t see another one in it for me. From my conversations with Denzel, this is the final one [for him] as well.”

He continued,

“[Robert McCall] He’s a little darker. He has to find his way back to the light.”

Fuqua further explained the trouble which would cross Washington’s path in the form of the Italian Mafia. He said,

“A lot of them are the younger generation type. They’re a little edgier, a little more aggressive. It feels dangerous because it’s not just drugs and stuff. You’re dealing with terrorists even more now.”

During an interview with Empire before the current SAG-AFTRA strike, Washington hinted that the third installment of the Equalizer franchise might be the last. He said,

“I don’t want to say he’s found happiness, and I don’t want to give it all away, but he meets someone lovely, he’s in a lovely town, and he seems to be at peace. That seems to be a good place to stop. I didn’t know that there were going to be three. Definitely didn’t know that when we did the first one. I didn’t know how it would end.”

According to Fuqua, there is no doubt that Fuqua’s upcoming film “The Equalizer 3” will showcase Washington’s changed and empowered attitude. If what director Antoine Fuqua stated is true, the franchise ending would mark the end of an alternative to Hollywood’s increasing action movie output.
