The dark historical drama “Oppenheimer” contains an intimate scene that has been censored in some countries outside the U.S., including India. In response to the latest release of Christopher Nolan, Indian officials allegedly criticized the s*x scene between Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh as “a scathing attack on Hinduism.” Indian audiences were given a different version of the n*de scenes during the film’s first screening on July 21.
During the intimate scene in the movie, Florence Pugh, who played Jean Tatlock, is seen wearing a CGI black dress, which shocked the Indian audience. According to reports, some religious reasons exist for censoring those intimate scenes in India. The global release of Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan and Barbie by Greta Gerwig on July 21 left both films competing at the box office. Despite both films featuring an equally impressive cast of A-list stars, Barbie proved more successful on the big screen, according to reports and fan responses.

Oppenheimer: Florence Pugh Gets Covered In CGI Black Dress During A S*X Scene With Cillian Murphy
Several Indian fans were shocked and amused by the intimate scene between Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh in Christopher Nolan’s latest release, “Oppenheimer” in India, where the actress is originally n*ked but covered with a black dress made using CGI. The CGI efforts have drawn criticism on social media as fans think that Indians can watch the explosion of an atomic bomb and its catastrophic results in Oppenheimer but not a n*ked Florence Pugh. Most fans are, however, unaware of the reasons behind the censorship of the movie.
The scene, which involves a few questions, shows Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped develop the atomic bomb, sitting n*ked next to Florence Pugh, playing Jean Tatlock, a Communist Party member with whom he had a long affair. The sequence featured both actors chatting n*ked to each other. To avoid showing n*dity, Pugh is covered in a black dress in the print released in India.
Indian Officials Have Denounced Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’: Here’s Why?
According to Variety reports, several moviegoers in India showed up at Oppenheimer showings as early as 3 a.m. on opening day, and social media erupted with protests shortly after that. Several Indian officials also reportedly condemn the movie, claiming that a s*x scene between Murphy and Pugh is a disheartening attack on Hindu religious beliefs.
The Save Culture Save India (SCSI) Foundation founder Uday Mahurkar wrote a lengthy post on Twitter,
“A scene in the movie shows a woman makes a man read Bhagwad Geeta aloud while getting over him and doing s*xual in**rcourse. She is holding Bhagwad Geeta in one hand, and the other hands seems to be adjusting the position of their reproductive organs.”
He added,
“The Bhagwad Geeta is one of the most revered scriptures of Hinduism. Bhagwad Geeta has been the inspiration for countless sanyasis, brahmcharis and legends who live a life of self-control and perform selfless noble deeds.”
Mahurkar added,
“We do not know the motivation and logic behind this unnecessary scene on the life of a scientist. But this is a direct assault on religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus; rather, it amounts to waging a war on the Hindu community and almost appears to be part of a larger conspiracy by anti-Hindu forces.”
Jean Tatlock, played by Pugh, pauses in**rcourse during the s*x scene in question to pick up the Bhagawad Geeta from a bookshelf before instructing Murphy’s character, J. Robert Oppenheimer, to read it, where he reads, “I am become Death, destroyer of worlds” and resumes in**rcourse.
According to the media outlet, to protect Hindu religious beliefs and Bhagwad Geeta’s dignity, Anurag Thakur, India’s minister for information and broadcasting, has requested that the s*x scene be removed from Christopher Nolan’s latest release.
